Our Spiritual Defensive Weapons

John Siefker

The weapons that the Lord has given to us are not carnal, they are spiritual. It says in 2 Corinthians 10:4, "For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds."

We have two different types of weapons. The one type of weapons is used to protect us from the attacks of the enemy and the other type of weapons is used to fight against the enemy with.

Jesus is our:

  • Belt of Truth - John 14:6
  • Breastplate of Righteousness - Jeremiah 23:6
  • Boots of Peace - Isaiah 9:6
  • Shield of Faith - Hebrews 12:2
  • Helmet of Salvation - 1 Thessalonians 5:9
  • Protection - Psalm 91:1, 4, 9-10

Here are some of our spiritual defensive weapons that I saw in the "Weapons Room" that we have at our disposal to protect ourselves from the attacks of the enemy.

Belt

A belt is used to hold our clothes and garments on. We can than move, walk, or run without our clothes falling off of us. This is the same for our spiritual armor as well, it hold our armor in place.

A belt can also be a band or a sash. It is used to hold something together and it requires a certain amount of strength to do this. So we see that the belt represents strength and power.

Ephesians 6:14 says, "…Having your loins girt about with truth…"

The truth that it is talking about here is the truth of and in the Word of God, both written and spoken (rhema & logos). Psalm 119:160 says, "Thy Word is true from the beginning…"

John 14:6 says, "…I am…the truth…"

In Jesus and in His Word we get and receive; His strength and power. This is a very important piece of our spiritual armor. We need this otherwise we would become weak and fall in the heat of the battle.

Breastplate

A breastplate is a piece of armor that is used to protect the part of the body from the neck to the navel, where the ribs end. It consists of two pieces, one covering the front and the other covering the back.

The breastplate protects the very important vitals areas of a person. These areas are the heart and the lungs.

Ephesians 6:14 says, "…Having on the breastplate of righteousness."

Another piece of our protective spiritual armor is the breastplate. We would not last very long without this piece of armor on in a fight.

Jeremiah 23:6 says, "…The Lord Our Righteousness."

1 Corinthians 1:30 says, "But of Him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us…righteousness…"

Jesus is our righteousness and He is also our protective breastplate. Jesus lives in us and we are His children; the enemy cannot take us or get at us unless we open the door through our decisions or choices that we make.

Boots

Boots and shoes are a protective covering for the feet. It provides protection to our feet so we can walk wherever we need to without hurting or cutting our feet.

Ephesians 6:15 says, "And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace."

This is another piece of our protective spiritual armor. Our feet would not last very long without this piece of armor on. We would not be able to walk or run very fast over sharp objects and in hot or cold areas.

Ephesians 2:14 says, "For He is our peace…"

Isaiah 9:6 says, "…The Prince of Peace."

Jesus Christ is our peace and He is also our protective footwear. As we obey Him and walk with Him, He gives us such a deep peace that the enemy cannot steal from us. No matter what the enemy is doing around us there is such calm in our lives.

Shield

A shield is a large oblong piece of material that is used to protect something from harm. They can be made out of different kinds of metal or wood.

Ephesians 6:16 says, "Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

The "shield of faith" is another piece of our protective spiritual armor that we need. We would be open to attacks from above and around us, without a shield.

Psalm 3:3 says, "But thou, O Lord, art a shield for (about) me…"

Psalm 28:7 says, "The Lord is my strength and my shield…"

Hebrews 12:2 says, "Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith…"

Our precious Lord Jesus Christ is our shield of faith. He is our protection about us as long as we follow and obey Him. The shield usually is in front of the person and the person follows it. So that is why it is important that we follow Him and that we don't run out in front of Him.

Many of us have run out in front of the Lord, who is our shield, and we have gotten hurt and ourselves in trouble. We are very vulnerable to the attacks of the enemy without the Lord with us.

Helmet

A helmet is a protective hat that protects the head area. It is made out of a harden material that prevents penetration. It protects the brain which is the central command center of the body.

Ephesians 6:17 says, "And take the helmet of salvation…"

The "helmet of salvation" is an important defensive weapon that we must have. Without Jesus as our Lord and Saviour, we would be lost and completely open to the schemes, tactics, and plans of the enemy.

1 Thessalonians 5:9 says, "…Obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ."

Jesus is our salvation and in Him we receive eternal life. Jesus also provides a covering for our mind and thoughts, if we keep our focus on Him.

The Blood of Jesus

The "blood of Jesus" is another important defensive weapon that we have. The enemy does not like this one.

Exodus 12:7, 13 says, (7) "And they shall take of the blood, and strike (put) it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses… (13) And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you…"

In these verses, we see that the blood of Jesus is our token which means: "sign, a distinguishing mark, banner, or warning." This is like a "No Trespassing" sign to the enemy.

1 John 1:7 says, "…The blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin."

Revelations 1:5 says, "…Unto Him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in His own blood."

The blood of Jesus cleanses us from all our sins, which is the contamination of the enemy. His blood is our cleansing agent.

Angels

Angels are ministers of the Lord (Psalm 104:4). They hearken to the His voice and do His Word (Psalm 103:20).

Psalm 34:7 says, "The angel of the Lord encampeth round about them that fear Him and delivereth them."

Psalm 91:11-12 says, "(11) For He shall give His angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. (12) They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone."

Exodus 23:20 says, "Behold, I send an Angel before thee, to keep thee in the way, and to bring thee into the place which I have prepared."

The angels here in these verses are our guardians. They are with us to keep and to protect us from harm.

Daniel 6:22 says, "My God hath sent His angel and hath shut the lions' mouths, that they have not hurt me…"

The guardian angel of the Lord came to protect Daniel from the lions. The devil was trying to use the lions as a plan of attack against Daniel. The devil is like a roaring lion (1 Peter 5:8).

Wall of Fire

The "wall of fire" is another important defensive weapon that we have. The enemy knows that if he gets too close to the fire that it will burn him.

Zechariah 2:5 says, "For I, saith the Lord, will be a wall of fire round about…"

The Lord said that He will be a wall of fire that is around us and the enemy cannot get at us. He doesn't like the fire and he knows some day soon that hell is where he will be for all of eternity.

2 Kings 6:17 says, "…And behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha."

In 2 Kings 6, we see that Elisha had a mountain of horses and chariots of fire around him that was protecting him from the armies of the Syrians.

Cloud of Glory

Isaiah 4:5 says, "And the Lord will create upon every dwelling place of mount Zion, and upon her assemblies, a cloud and smoke…for upon all the glory shall be a defence (covering)."

The "cloud of glory" is a defence for us. It is also a canopy and a covering to protect us. What a wonderful defensive weapon to have for our protection from the enemy.

Pillar of Fire

Exodus 13:21 says, "And the Lord went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go by day and night."

Fire produces light and we see how the Lord used a pillar of fire for light to lead His people in the night (dark). The light of the Lord brings light to us to help us to see His direction and to reveal to us the plans of the enemy.

Secret Place - Shadow of His Wings

There is no other place that we would rather be then in the refuge of our Lord. This is our safety zone from the attacks of the enemy.

Psalm 91:1, 4, 9-10 says, "(1) He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. (4) He shall cover thee with His feathers and under His wings shalt thou trust… (9) Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation; (10) There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling."

Psalm 17:8 says, "…Hide me under the shadow (as protection, defense) of Thy wings."

Psalm 32:7 says, "Thou art my hiding place; thou shalt preserve (keep) me from trouble…"

The secret place, His feathers and the shadow of His wings are wonderful places of protection from all the attacks of the enemy. The enemy can never get to us in those places unless we remove ourselves from those places of the Lord's protection.

No matter what - we must always keep our eyes on Jesus!
